As I exchange more ABC into USD, I'd need to update the calculations to recompute the accurate exchange rate (yeah, lots of work there, probably will need a spreadsheet to do it) for the next transactions. if I purchased something for 10 USD, I should enter it as a transaction of 25 ABC, with an exchange rate of 2.5 so that it comes out as 10 USD (obviously it should be 10 USD or the balance in this account would no longer match). If I no longer exchanged any ABC for USD, then I should enter transactions at the 2.5 exchange rate e.g. So overall I exchanged 500 ABC for 200 USD, so an average ABC/USD rate of 2.5. say I exchanged 200 ABC (a fictional currency to stand for my native one) for 100 USD, for an ABC/USD exchange rate of 2, and later exchanged 300 ABC for 100 USD, for an ABC/USD exchange rate of 3. To fix the accounting equation, I'm thinking I'd have to carefully choose an exchange rate for each transaction so that it reflects the actual price in my native currency that I spent to acquire these funds in the foreign currency. My thinking is that, once this is done for every foreign currency transaction, this would freeze the exchange rate and end the whac-a-mole game, but not necessarily reconcile the accounting equation.

What I think might work would be to, instead, input the transaction as one in my native currency, with a conversion to USD at a chosen exchange rate. To provide context, currently if I have an account denominated in USD (which isn't my native currency) and I make a purchase in USD in that account, then I just input the transaction as a regular USD transaction, no currency conversions. I have possibly devised a solution, and I'd like some input on whether it might work. But knowing Banktivity and its developers, I'm pretty sure they didn't bother to implement any real solution to this problem. I'm looking for a real fix to this, a way to 'freeze' the exchange rate at some value so that these fluctuations do not show up. In addition, this fundamentally breaks the accounting equation - it used to be, just after I started this budget, that I could add up the amounts on the envelopes and on my accounts, and they would match to the cent, but now they no longer do. I've been playing whac-a-mole by zeroing these envelopes only to have balances show up the next time I go into the budget screen, but it gets tiring quickly. So an envelope that I previously zeroed may now have, without me entering any new transactions on that category, a positive or negative balance corresponding to a few % of the amount spent in/added to that category. My issue is that, in the envelopes of the envelope budgeting feature, any categories where foreign currency transactions were entered will have fluctuated slightly every time I go to the budgeting screen, due to changes in exchange rates.
